For my digital story I did a short documentary on national monuments and symbols particularly the statue of freedom on top of the capitol dome.
The reason I chose this story to do is that it sets up a larger lesson for my classroom. In my 12th grade government class an important component is understanding the roots of our own system of government. We get the idea of individual rights from English law and philosophers. We get the idea of democracy from the ancient Greeks and the idea of a republic from the Roman empire. By linking national symbols and monuments to ideas and concepts "stolen" or co-opted by the united states it helps solidify those other roots in their minds.
